Helmuth Fritz, MD, has been engaged in vascular ultrasound research and its practical preventive clinical applications through Loma Linda University School of Medicine since 2003. He is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a certified vascular ultrasound technologist. He has over 20 years experience practicing general internal medicine in Washington State.
Prior to his LLU appointment, he served as a staff physician and researcher at the NEWSTART Medical Clinic at Weimar Institute, a health and education organization that focuses on lifestyle to treat and prevent many common degenerative diseases. Dr. Fritz is particularly interested in utilizing ultrasound research to validate the effectiveness of a lifestyle-focused approach to health care and periodically returns to Weimar as a substitute staff physician where he continues active patient care and interaction. Special topics of interest are type 2 diabetes and subclinical atherosclerosis (the detection of risk for development of atherosclerosis complications at the earliest stages to permit maximal prevention opportunities).
He is Conceptual Developer of an automated software program, SonoCalc, for performing measurements of vascular ultrasound images. It was the second such program to receive FDA clearance for clinical application and is being used as a standard against which other such programs are being compared. He remains actively involved as a consultant for improving clinical applications of ultrasound in a primary care preventive setting.
